Little Hollywood

Chicago, Summer 2010
Transformers 3

The excitement here in my corner of Chicago is palpable.  Hearts are aflutter, and it's not just the 100 degree sweltering heat.  Michigan Avenue is shut down for the filming of Transformers 3.  I guess I'm lucky I don't have a car!

Honestly, I've spent most of the past several days in my apartment.  I have been out for a little while each day, but the heat and humidity are not easy with the nausea and fatigue which are part of the chemotherapy.  I prefer air conditioning right now.

I did sneak out and see Despicable Me--which I loved!  The kids told me it was hysterical and they were right.  It's kind of funny--here I am finally alone after years of kids' movies and that's the one I chose to go see!  And I'm planning some more movies, too...

That's how it goes in Little Hollywood!

  1. Hi,Holly - It's so great that you went out on your own to see Despicable Me, and so wonderful that you enjoyed it. I'm so glad you like your apartment and the beautiful view - so many tall buildings! It would be hard to see yourself as "lucky" most of the time, but meeting other people undergoing stem cell transplants for various reasons, and especially the poor woman who has to try to work through hers, must really give you a different perspective on the situation.

Thanks for keeping your sense of humor, even while you're in Little Hollywood.

    Take care,

    Love,
    Elaine

  2. Hi Holly - We just want you to know how much we admire what you are doing - and in hot and humid Chicago no less! Lou and I both share your optimism for your treatment - you could not be in a better place (except from Nov. to May, and July and August). But putting weather aside, your sense of humor and determination get an A+. Thanks so much for the blogs.

    Love,

    Barb & Lou

  3. Hi Holly,

This is Phil and Jeanette Garcia checking in. We've not been able to follow you as closely as we would have liked recently. But we have seen this latest episode in Chicago and can only wish the best for you. Some small chatter to distract you from things like 'bladder irrigations (yuk)'. We have moved back to the state of Washington after 7 years. Jeanette was a kidney dialysis RN there and we had plans to stay a while...longer. Jeanette got the wrong end of an incompetent and prejudiced immigration officer who decided (quite wrongly as protested by Jeanette's employers) that she did not qualify as having worked enough in Canada to stay!! It was devastating to Jeanette and I just wanted to leave. Her employer and our friends wanted to start a petition to keep us on Vancouver Island but the disappointment was already setting in for us. There was no appeal...his decision only. So, forget Canada! I am in the process of receiving my Spanish citizenship to make me dual and then EU qualified. Where is this all going? Remember your post a few days back....universal health care. All of Europe wants to come to Spain for their advanced and humane patient treatment. As citizens of Spain, we hope to have a foot in both areas of the world for our care, should we need it. Decided by our residency, of course. I'm now Medicare age with a provided Supplement from United Airlines. They want to take that away if they can figure out the process. But we retirees continue to fight the CEO at every turn. On another note, my mom Norma has just been accepted in hospice care. Her kidneys are down to a GFR of 7 and Aranesp (read: continued health insurance battle) is the only thing keeping her going. The circulation impurities have made her mental faculties dimmer each week. She is comfortable at the assisted living portion of La Costa Glen. The Hospice acceptance was required to allow La Costa to defer to Norma's wish for her DNR. Otherwise, by charter they were required to always call emergency. My mom says that it's time....though her heart is strong with a lowering pulse. We're in SD now and I really don't know what my plans will be. We thought she was passing last weekend and now she seems to have mustered maybe her 8th life of the lucky cat. Jeanette and I are showering you with the warmest possible healing energies. If ever you get a chance, we would love to receive an email. Jeanette is: jrmg59@gmail.com.

    All our best wishes,
    Phil and Jeanette
